Bienvenue

Occasionally it seems that world is in pure chaos with nothing making sense, but that doesn't matter as long as I can sew. Sewing is a form of art, or at the very least creativity, and a form of expression. A great outlet for the tension of everyday life. Also you can make cute things. The craft revolution is truly taking place, old skills are being revived by a new generation, but with a seriously modern twist.

I've made Mario pillow cases, a giraffe print background, and turned duvet covers into summer dresses. I enjoy making something unique, special, and me- then I like wearing it and watching it fall to pieces or not fit properly. Then I enjoy (slightly less) fixing it.

One day I shall have a room filled with glorious fabrics and boxes of notions, and on that day I will have found my nirvana. But until then this blog will exist as my virtual haberdashery and sewing room. Hopefully you'll enjoy looking at my creations as much as I enjoy looking at other blogs, and you'll be inspire to make something of your own.

Felt Star Trek Christmas Stocking

Well it might have made more sense to publish before Christmas but I was making it for boyfriend and I didn't want him to see ahead of time- although since he didn't really notice it even after I waved it in front of his face it probably wouldn't have mattered.

A few months ago I started working my way through Star Trek: The Next Generation (bringing back some lovely memories of a childhood spent watching TNG marathons on sunny Saturday afternoons) and boyfriend got in on the act and we watched together as he got increasingly upset ("why was this cancelled? It was really one of the best things on TV?").  We moved on from that to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and re-realised how much we love Colm Meany and his portrayal of Chief O'Brien.

Anyway, when I decided to make him a Christmas stocking the only choice was to make it look like a Star Trek uniform (there have been many variations but I chose the red Command uniforms from TNG that had the most red in them to make it Christmassy).

I drew a stocking shape by hand, cut it out of paper and used that to but out my fabric pieces.   I used red, black, and cream felt and hand sewed it all together.  I used the cream for the collar 'pips' and the logo/communicator.

Here it is looking even more awesome given that it is stuffed with and on top of presents!

Fabric Christmas Tree

Using the same method I used to make my cactus pin cushion I made a christmas tree out of left over fabric.   I had two types of green fabric which I cut into 6 triangles.  I sewed them together in pairs to make 3 triangles, I then placed them on top of each other and sewed down the middle to create 6 pockets.  I then stuffed them with toy stuffing.  I sewed the bottom and attached a roll of brown fabric for the trunk.  Alas poor tree does not stand up and has to be propped but I have not had chance to buy a pot to put it in :(

Green Velour Top

Its a velvet christmas- except not quite because this is velour which is cheaper!
I copied around an existing long sleeve top to make a new long sleeve top from green velour to wear out for a christmas meal with friends.    Here are some terrible photos I took!  I was working quite quickly and didn't finish off the edges very well and I discovered that velour curls up a crazy amount and the top kept rolling up out of my skirt, which was quite annoying.

Velvet Bag

After adjusting my velvet dress- click here for that post- I had quite a bit of extra fabric left over so I made a matching bag :)
